Frequently Asked Questions

How do I accept CNU's offer of admission? 
If you haven't already, we hope you say "yes" to the best for years of your life.   To let us know that you'll be joining the CNU family in the fall, simply complete the Plan to Attend Form, or mail the card included in your original admission letter.    Your plan to attend confirmation must be received before May 1, 2007.   
Are freshmen required to live on campus?   
Freshmen and sophomores are required to reside in University housing unless you live with a parent or legal guardian in Gloucester County, Hampton, Isle of Wight County, James City County, Mathews County, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg or York County.
How much is CNU's Housing Deposit?
To reserve a residence hall space, a $250 deposit is required by May 1, 2007.    You may access and complete the Housing Request Form using the ID number that was mailed to you.    Please print, sign and return two copies of this Housing and Dining Services Contract Acceptance Form, along with your $250 housing deposit.   To learn more about the housing deposit, click here.   
Am I required to attend Setting Sail and Welcome Week?    

Setting Sail, our new student orientation program, is mandatory for all first year students planning to attend CNU.  You must choose one of the following programs :  June 18-19, 21-22, 25-26 or 28-29.

  

 In two informative and fun packed days, you'll meet future classmates, participate in exciting and informative sessions on academic and student life, meet your faculty advisor and schedule your classes.     Orientation continues with Welcome Week, a three-day University Academic Orientation program, which begins on August 22 and continues through August 26.    A one-time fee of $250 covers the costs for Setting Sail and Welcome Week.   An invitation explaining how to register for Setting Sail and submit the reservation fee will be mailed in March and available online April 1. 

Can my admission be deferred to another term of entry? 
Requests for deferred admission must be made in writing to the Dean of Admissions.   

How do I find out about scholarships and other financial aid? 

A variety of merit and need based scholarships are available to those who qualify.   A separate application is not required to qualify.  If you wish to apply for need based financial aid, you must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by February 15th, to ensure that we receive it by March 1.  The Office of Financial Aid will begin to mail award letters starting late February.    To learn more about scholarships, click here

I'm a Virginia resident or a dependent of an active duty military member stationed in Virginia.     Am I required to complete the Application For-In State Tuition Rates?   

Yes.  As required by the Commonwealth of Virginia guidelines, all students seeking to qualify for in-state tuition rates must submit the Application for Virginia in-state tuition rates.  If you haven't already, complete our online Application for Virginia In-State Tuition Rates.       Questions?   Contact us at uresidency@cnu.edu

When will I be assigned an academic advisor?  
Academic advisors are assigned at Setting Sail    They will assist you in course selection, planning your major, and even offer advice on graduate school.    For more information on advising, visit the Academic Advising web site.  
When can I find out my housing and roommate assignment?
Students will be notified of their residence hall and roommate assignment in late July to early August.
Does CNU offer Learning Communities?

CNU offers Learning Communities for first-year students.  This is an opportunity to live together, take classes together and be mentored by upper-class students and professors who are dedicated to your success.    More information on Learning Communities will be mailed in April.    

Can freshmen have cars on campus?

Freshmen are permitted to have cars on campus.    The cost for a fall 2008 decal will be announced in April 2007.  ( Decals are $200 for the current year.)

When do I get my CNU ID number, ID card and have access to email. 
Your CNU ID number will be mailed in your enrollment letter.   Instructions on how to gain access to your email and other web-based services will be be issued at Setting Sail.    
Should I purchase a notebook or desk-top computer?

Does CNU offer wireless internet access?  
CNU offers wireless access in all academic buildings, David Student Union, Freeman Center and in the residence hall lobbies.   
How much is tuition at CNU?

In-state tuition along with room and board for fall 2007 is $14,560.  Out-of-state tuition along with room and board for fall 2007 is $21,632.   The tuition rates for fall 2008 will announced in April 2007.

Are there any tuition payment plans?

There is a monthly tuition payment plan here at CNU. This plan allows you to pay your annual tuition and fees in 10 equal monthly installments. The plan begins in June with the last payment due in March.  For more information on this plan, click here.

I have AP/IB/Cambridge/ Dual Enrollment credits from high school, how do I make sure they are added to my college career?

Credits for Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Cambridge units and dual- enrollment courses are welcome at CNU. College credit may be granted for scores of 32 or better on AP exams, 4 or 5 on higher level IB exams, A or AS level Cambridge exams and qualifying grades on courses for dual-enrollment. Your exam results must be sent to the Office of the Registrar to be evaluated for college credit.

Is there a deadline for the final high school transcripts?
Your enrollment is contingent upon the successful completion of your current coursework and graduation. Your final high school transcript must be received in the Office of Admissions before August 1, 2007.
I am interested in playing a sport at CNU.  How do I find out more?
CNU offers 24 varsity sports for men and women.   Contact the Athletics Department to learn more about participating.
