Application Process

An application will be considered complete and ready for review once we have received the following components:

  •  $45 non refundable application fee made out to CNU.   Online applicants must have a valid credit card.  Students seeking a fee waiver should consult with their high school guidance department.
  • Official high school transcript.  Give the Secondary School Report Form to your guidance office to include with your transcript. 
  • Official SAT and/or ACT scores.  CNU's SAT code is 5128, and our ACT code is 4345.
  • An essay or personal statement of approximately 250 - 500 words on the topic of your choice.
  • Optional - A personal recommendation, preferably from a teacher in a core subject

The Application for Virginia Tuition Rates, if you are applying for in-state tuition rates.   This form must be completed if your are claiming entitlement to in-state tuition privileges pursuant to Section 23-7.4 of the Code of Virginia.   Supporting documents and additional information may be requested.  You must submit this form before the first day of the semester or term for which you are applying if you wish to be considered for in-state status.

Standardized Test Optional Plan    More >>>

Students with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 or rank in the upper 10% of their classes, have the option of whether to submit standardized test scores (SAT or ACT). If you meet the above criteria, and do not want standardized test scores to be used in the evaluation of your application, please indicate this on the appropriate section in the application. Applicants choosing not to submit standardized test scores are strongly encouraged to submit at least one recommendation from a teacher in a core subject area.  Home-schooled applicants, students attending schools outside the United States, and students wishing to be considered for the Honors Program must submit standardized test scores.

Admissions Notification

CNU operates on a modified rolling admission basis.  As soon as your application is received, it is reviewed, and we will attempt to notify you of your status in a timely manner.   In some cases, students not offered admission initially, but presenting competitive application will be deferred for additional consideration.  In these instances, students are given an opportunity to submit supplemental information.

Admission Criteria

To apply for admission, freshman applicants should pursue a rigorous college preparatory program such as the Advanced Studies Diploma (ASD) in Virginia.  Curriculum guidelines include:

  • Four units of English
  • Four units of math, with at least Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II required
  • Four units of history or social studies
  • Four units of laboratory science
  • Three or more units in one foreign language (preferred), or two units each of two foreign languages

We look for students who display the ability and desire to benefit from a rigorous and rewarding academic environment. CNU places great emphasis  on curriculum and looks with favor  on Honors, AP, IB and dual enrolled courses. The University also seeks students who demonstrate leadership ability, a commitment to service in their communities, exemplary talents and diverse life experiences.
